One of the most vibrant economies in the region, Peru has grown significantly during the last 10 years, and particularly after the conclusion of the political crisis unleashed during the end of the Alberto Fujimori administration (1990-2000). However, institutions and political parties remain very weak and lack of credibility affects the sustainability of public policies. Small remnants of the Shining Path still operate in the Rio Apurímac and Ene Valley, while another block of the guerrilla group surrendered in 2012 in the Upper Huallaga Valley. The cultivation of coca has grown in these regions, where the Ollanta Humala government still faces serious threats to governance and stability.
