President Michel Martelly, in office since May 2011, has had a fully functioning government for only half that time and faces mounting public protests due to increased prices and reduced availability of food. Even if the forthcoming elections are satisfactory, the absence of a solid political system will continue to impede progress. Crisis Group closed operations in Haiti at the end of 2012, due to financial constraints and re-prioritisation of our work in the region. However, we will continue our close monitoring on the evolution of the political situation in Haiti, and will consider future coverage according to developments.
