Background

President Rafael Correa won re-election in a landslide and obtained a third term (2013-2017) on February 2013. Ecuador´s economy has grown and social stability has generally become the norm. However, Correa faced serious confrontations with a sector of the national media and has been accused of harassing the opposition and curtailing civil liberties. Investments in extractive industries are challenged by local and indigenous communities, and the government plans to ask the international community for funding to forestall the granting of concessions for investment in the Amazon jungle´s national parks. Ecuador has been described as a country with a thriving money laundering industry for drug trafficking profits.
